Matt Ford has been Djing since the late 1990s and has done a mixture of FM and internet radio, club gigs and bar Djing in the UK. He has been a resident DJ and promoter for several small-scale house and techno parties for those in the know. His passion is for presenting the freshest, most interesting sounds from a range of genres including breakin' electro and deep house, although a love for techno often jumps to the fore. A lot of the musical pathways in his head were laid down at the House of God, a legendary techno club in the UK. In the course of running the Fresh Static parties, he arranged for one of the original residents of the House of God to DJ in Second Life for the first time.

For anyone not familiar with Second Life, it's a 3D online virtual world in which everything has been built and designed by the people in it. In terms of clubbing and DJing, it's like internet radio + live chat in a 3D game environment.

Olaf Quintessa is the Second Life avatar of Matt Ford. Olaf is the resident DJ and promoter of Fresh Static @ The Drome in virtual Detroit, and spins a mixture of techno, electro and freaky house.

Olaf says "The electronic music scene in Second Life is growing fast, with all sorts of styles represented by different club nights from dubstep to deep house. The idea with Fresh Static is to promote underground techno and electro, by arranging for established real world DJs to come and play in Second Life alongside DJs from the virtual scene, and also by writing and blogging about cool stuff happening on the virtual techno scene. Blogs, Facebook, MySpace and Twitter are all great ways for spreading the word about yourself and sharing your sounds. Now I think Second Life offers yet another way for DJs to get themselves heard. In particular Second Life is really good for connecting with an audience and getting feedback. I think the next wave is going to be mixed reality - Two way DJing between real life and virtual venues, with video projections of the crowds at both parties - making it possible to sample the party scene a thousand miles away and hear DJs you'd never otherwise come across. The Drome is leading the way with regular mixed reality parties coming up."
